Good Evening,
Welcome to Obscurityville. My purpose here is to talk about the sports that aren't talked about. I don't mean curling or that strange Aztec precursor to basketball or Timber Sports. I mean sub-NCAA college sports, small NCAA college sports (I mean small as in size of the university, or the size of the body of participants), high school sports that ESPN ignores and internationally popular sports.
I have been trying to figure out where and when and how I want to approach this project. The details remain fuzzy, somewhere in the depths of my subconscious. I intend to cover major events, rivalries, and those figures that have escaped main stream media.
My motivation and inspiration come from a variety of places. The first would be the books I read in my adolescence. They include The Last Shot by Darcy Frey, The Last Amateurs by John Feinstein, Skyline: One Season, One City, One Team by Tim Keown, and Fall River Dreams by Bill Reynolds. I suggest you read them all. Further I'm inspired by the influx of bloggers who resist the urge to ramble mindlessly about their boring and depressing personal lives. Particularly Kyle Whelliston at the Mid-Majority, The Welsh-Ryan Ramblings and the non-sports related, but nonetheless awesome Freakonomics.
I remain concerned about my ability to find regular, interesting content. I have no doubt that it exists, but the responsibility of compiling it while contributing meaningful commentary might be beyond my abilities. I also refuse to write for no one but myself. So if our Population remains at 1, then this venture will be short lived.
If anyone who runs this little site down has interesting ideas, please let me know.
As it stands, I think my first substantive post will come sometime this weekend. Stay Tuned.
